This image is one in a series documenting installation of the diagonal wall bracing in the Nerdacres Equipment Barn:

After the installation of the roof headers was finished, the last step before beginning work on the roof itself was to install diagonal wall bracing.

Wall diagonals dramatically increase the strength of a building against horizontal sheer. While some people don't use it, we've seen buildings without it permanently damaged from vehicle impacts, like an errant tractor. With diagonal bracing, you pretty much guarantee that such a disaster limits such damage to the immediate area of impact. Pretty cheap insurance, so we brace.

The wall diagonals are attached to the interior side of the exterior wall purlins using 2.5" (10 gauge) Nails. The nails are driven from the inside out.

The diagonal braces from from the first wall purlin (at the 2' level) up to the roof headers, which are at 10' from ground datum.

The diagonal braces are installed in a juxtaposed angling for maximum strength and the ends are all 45° cut to exact length so the ends face-rest against the posts. In addition to being nailed into the wall purlins they are also toe-nailed into the posts at the ends.
